Emmett & I got to know each other when band director, John Knurr, put a Dixieland band together at Encina my junior year. Over these many years, we had occasion to play & sing at weddings, a rock band, the Jubilee and about five years ago I joined him in a small "Big Band" at a Stockton festival. I always admired that playing music was always his core, his passion and largely his living. It hurt when, due to his illness, he had to 'put down' his clarinets and saxophones. Wow. His passing can truly be defined as freedom from pain and the ills which plagued him. A friend to the end. Love, Jane

?At the 45th reunion, Alan stayed the course of the evening, lingering at Berkeley's afterward and engaging in pleasant conversation with us. I was aware he was ill. It is sad to hear of his passing. Jane Larson Smith
